📅 Chronology
First Calcification
3 – 4 months
Crown Completed
4 – 5 years
Eruption
7 – 8 years
Root Completion
10 – 11 years
👁️ Labial Aspect
- Outline: Trapezoid — shortest, uneven side at the cervical
- Mesial outline: slightly convex. Distal outline: more convex
- Mesial contact: incisal third. Distal contact: incisal/middle junction
- Mesioincisal angle: sharp / right angle. Distoincisal angle: rounded
- 3 developmental lobes, separated by 2 shallow depressions on the labial surface
- Single conical root, tapered distally
Exam tip: The mesioincisal angle being sharp while the distoincisal is rounded is a classic distinguishing feature used to tell mesial from distal in isolated teeth.
👅 Lingual Aspect
- Crown converges lingually — narrower trapezoid than the labial view
- Cingulum: prominent, at the cervical third
- Mesial & distal marginal ridges bound the lingual fossa
📐 Mesial Aspect
Outline
Triangular — base at the cervix, apex at the incisal
Labial Outline
Convex at the cervical third
Lingual Outline
Concavoconvex
Cervical (CEJ) Curvature
3.5 mm — greatest of all teeth
High-yield fact: The mesial cervical line curvature of the maxillary central incisor (3.5 mm) is the GREATEST curvature found on any tooth in the mouth.
📏 Distal & Incisal Aspects
- Distal cervical curvature: 2.5 mm (less than the mesial)
- Distal contact area: more cervical than the mesial — at the incisal/middle junction
- Incisal aspect outline: triangular — straight incisal ridge
- Crown is wider labiolingually than mesiodistally when viewed incisally
- Incisal ridge lies lingual to the root axis
MAXILLARY CENTRAL INCISOR
📅 Chronology
Calcification: 3–4 mo
Crown: 4–5 yrs
Eruption: 7–8 yrs
Root: 10–11 yrs
👁️ Labial
Trapezoid outline
Mesioincisal = sharp/right
Distoincisal = rounded
3 lobes, 2 depressions
👅 Lingual
Cingulum prominent
Marginal ridges
Lingual fossa
📐 Mesial Aspect
Triangular outline
CEJ curvature 3.5mm — greatest
1
Labial Outline
Labial outline is a trapezoid — mesioincisal angle sharp, distoincisal angle rounded.
2
Greatest Curvature
Mesial CEJ curvature = 3.5 mm — the greatest cervical line curvature of ALL teeth.
3
Contact Areas
Mesial contact: incisal third. Distal contact: incisal/middle junction (more cervical).
4
Mesial Shape
Mesial aspect = triangular outline, base at the cervix, apex at the incisal.
5
Eruption Age
Erupts at 7–8 years. Crown completes earlier at 4–5 years.
6
3 Lobes
3 developmental lobes form the labial surface, separated by 2 shallow depressions.
7
Distal Curvature
Distal CEJ curvature = 2.5 mm — one full mm less than mesial.
8
Incisal Ridge
Incisal ridge is straight and lies lingual to the root axis.
9
Root Shape
Single, conical root that tapers distally and constricts at the cervix.
10
Incisal Width
From the incisal aspect, the crown is wider labiolingually than mesiodistally.

👁️ Labial Aspect
Labial
3 Developmental Lobes
Separated by mesiolabial and distolabial grooves — the central lobe is the largest.
- Mesioincisal angle: sharp / right angle
- Distoincisal angle: rounded
Full Tooth
Trapezoidal Crown, Conical Root
A single conical root tapers distally beneath the trapezoidal crown.
👅 Lingual Aspect
Lingual
Cingulum, Marginal Ridges & Lingual Fossa
The cingulum sits prominently at the cervical third, bounded by mesial and distal marginal ridges that frame the lingual fossa.
📐 Mesial & Distal Aspects
Mesial
Triangular Outline — Greatest CEJ Curvature
Cervical curvature of 3.5 mm — the greatest of any tooth in the mouth.
Distal
Triangular Outline — Smaller Curvature
Cervical curvature of 2.5 mm; the distal contact area sits more cervically than the mesial.
⬆️ Incisal Aspect
Incisal
Triangular Outline, Straight Ridge
Crown appears wider labiolingually than mesiodistally from this view, with a straight incisal ridge.
⚠️ Exam Trap: Don't confuse the mesial (3.5 mm) and distal (2.5 mm) cervical curvatures — the mesial is always the greater of the two, and is the greatest curvature of any tooth.
